Adding Diversity to Your Bookshelf (#wethechange)

June 12, 2020

This #wethechange challenge is simple but can have a powerful effect in our homes. Children are the front lines to change. What we read to them, what they see in books, and the way we discuss books with them is huge and carries over to the rest of their day to day interactions.

Here’s the challenge: take a good survey of your bookshelves. Who are the main characters in these books? Do they truly reflect the diversity of the world we live in? Do they show boys and girls who look different than us? If the answer is no, it’s time to add a few more titles to your shelves!

We’ve put together a list of a few books we love that include people of color. Some of them specifically address racial issues in the text, others do not but have main characters who are people of color. Change starts in our homes–get reading!

Will you accept this challenge? If so, tag us on Instagram or Facebook and show us what books you’re reading or one small change you’re making to your libraries at home! Go here for many of these titles!

Thanks to my friend Julie who is an amazing example to me of having a diverse bookshelf.

These two picture books talk about the lives of two athletes who had to overcome huge hurdles just to play the sport they loved.
This book is a gem! I love that the illustrator chose to depict the main character as a black girl with a boy friend with what we call “orange hair” in my family. Then the cute kids grow up and get married and have a little orange haired daughter. The most heartfelt, beautiful book!
More athletes and people in their field making a difference to African Americans throughout history and whose stories we still need to hear!

These titles, and more, are listed in our Amazon shop, here.
