Are you stuck in a Mother’s Day gift giving rut? If you want to stretch beyond the usual flowers and card routine, we’ve got a list of Mother’s Day gift ideas for you that are a bit outside the box. Your moms, aunts, sisters, daughters, best friends, etc. will think you put a lot of thought into the perfect Mother’s Day gift and go crazy over any of these ideas. At least we would be grinning ear to ear if someone were to gift them to us.
Of course, since this blog is all about civics, civility, and history, most of our Mother’s Day gift ideas are somewhat related to that theme. However, there are a couple we threw in there just because we loved them so much we had to share them with you.
Thomas Jefferson Heirloom Seeds
Have a mom or loved one who loves to garden? Send them heirloom seeds straight from Thomas Jefferson’s own garden at his home in Monticello! Not only will they think it’s awesome to grow the same types of flowers, herbs and veggies that Thomas Jefferson himself grew, but it’s something awesome they can do with kids and grandkids, too. If you are having trouble figuring out what kind of seeds to get, consider getting one of the seed sampler kits the Monticello shop offers. They offer collections from cool and warm season vegetables, herbs and “favorite flowers.” Even if you go with the single packets, you won’t be disappointed. There’s a mini history lesson on the back of each one.
“Women Who Dared” Blocks
We know what you’re thinking. Blocks for your mom? But hear us out on this one. These blocks aren’t ordinary ABC blocks for kids. These blocks are super special. The set includes 32 made in the USA, hand crafted blocks that feature women who made significant contributions to the world. In the set you’ll find women such as Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, and even Cleopatra and Mother Theresa. There’s women from both sides of the aisle, so don’t freak out if you see someone on there who thinks differently than you. If your mom is into history and women’s place in it, she’ll love these.
She Persisted Book
If you want to include a fun gift set with those “Women Who Dared” blocks, include Chelsea Clinton’s She Persisted book. There’s a U.S. history version and a world history version too.
Greencastle Soap Company
I’ve been hooked on the Greencastle Soap Company’s olive oil soaps for years. This company is based out of Spokane, Washington and hand makes all their soaps (you can even take a class on how to do it, if you’re in the area). Huckleberry soap is my all time favorite scent. And since I can’t send you the scent through your computer screen, you’ll have to take my word for it that it is DIVINE! In fact, my first Christmas being married, I told my husband I specifically wanted some huckleberry soap for Christmas. I think I even sent him the link. Instead, he got me mandarin orange scented soap from the mall, and I was gratefully disappointed (is that possible? You know what I mean, right?).
Greencastle Soap Company also has fun scents like Washington Apple, and a gift pack called Soaps of the West.
Scratch Your Travels Maps
If you want a fun idea for someone who loves to travel and has been all over the country (or the world), then check out Scratch Your Travels Maps made by Jetsetter Maps. Underneath the gold foil is a lovely watercolor scheme that is frame worthy when you’re done scratching off all the places you’ve visited. You can use code AMERICANMOM to save 10%.
Any Date Newspaper
This company says their products are “perfect for the person who has everything.” Is your mom super sentimental about certain dates? I’m not one of those people who remembers the date of my first date with my husband or the first time we held hands (I’m lucky I remember my children’s birthdays), but I definitely know people who make a big deal out of those types of things. Any Date Newspaper allows you to get an actual newspaper printed from any specific date you want. You can choose the month, date, and year, and even the city or a specific newspaper. Cool, right?
National Trust for Historic Preservation Membership
This is kind of cool for someone who really loves history. May is “Preservation” Month. How about a membership to the National Trust for Historic Preservation? What does that mean, exactly? The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a non-profit organization devoted to preserving the places where history happened. Membership has some perks. Just a $20 donation gets you get a subscription to their magazine, travel discounts at historic hotels, and a special discount to all other historic sites throughout the country. Along those same lines, if you’ve got a real history buff in mind, a night at a historic hotel would be a really cool gift, too. Go here to find a historic hotel near you.
Silver State Quarter Ring
There are some strong believers that you can’t go wrong with jewelry as a gift. But let me just say that jewelry with a story or deep meaning is even better. Is your mom, or special person in your life, super proud of their roots? Get them one of these beautiful silver rings made out of a quarter from the state of your choosing! Yes, that’s right. A ring made from a state quarter. They’re totally handmade, so no two are alike. For an extra cost, you can even purchase the punch out of the quarter and have it made into a necklace! Talk about a unique gift idea. I kind of drool just looking at these beauties!
Music About Motherhood
Cheri Magill’s music! We LOVE Cheri’s music. Oh my goodness do we love it! It will make you laugh, cry, and smile all at the same time. It has nothing to do with politics, history or civics but everything to do with the phase of life we are currently in: motherhood. She just released an album beautifully titled “Tour Guide,” devoted entirely to this crazy thing called motherhood. The “Tour Guide” song likens motherhood to being a tour guide through life for your kids. Is that not the most beautiful thought? It will make you want to savor each day of the phase you’re in and do everything in your power to slow it down just a bit. Another song, aptly named “Crazy” will have you playing it on repeat because it’s so catchy and so darn true. So, Cheri’s album is the perfect gift for your own mom or one that you think could use a little boost in the motherhood department. They will thank you! In fact, I’ve even caught my own kids singing along to some of the songs because they love it too. You can purchase her beautiful album on itunes or by visiting her website.
We are always looking for fun and unique gift ideas. Have any ideas you want to share? Please send them our way!
